Prayers of gratitude come from your Real Self and are heard throughout the Universe. Prayers asking for material possessions or worldly things come from an illusory self that falls away when we die. If you are praying for material possessions, you are likely not receiving them, because you are asking from an ego level, not from the Mind you share with God.
